The Tower Project - 1

The shell of the upper turret.

The shell of the cupola.
*
I've made a start on refurbishing the tower shown in an earlier picture. The main body of the upper turret level is made of foamcore, cut into equal rectangles, rabetted then glued using PVA. The cupola is cut from the thick inner card tube from a roll of labels, with thick card capping both ends. I want to cap the tower with an onion dome to follow the mitteleuropen Baroque style, but this poses the problem of how to approach it. A few ideas are bubbling away and I'll see which suits. I'm going to leave the cupola seperate to make it easier to model the dome then attach it to the turret and the whole to the main tower.

As silly as it sounds, you might look for some artificial onions.

I have a couple which I'm going to use as the basis for miniature "hot air balloons" for a "Hordes of the Things" army.

I wonder if you could find a plastic Christmas ornament that would suit (maybe cut down to make a flat base)?
other possibilities:
card models
styrofoam
other plastic shape, such as from a toy or ?

Oh yes, the plastic Christmas ornament idea is an excellent one, Fitz.

Here in Canada, our local Canadian Tire store carries lots of plastic ornaments (you don't want glass ornaments if you have cats . . . or for terrain). Some do indeed have that "onion" shape.

A.J., you probably have something in your area that sells something like this as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen and I'll certainly use them in future. I'm a bit restricted in the time to shop around at this time of year, so I crafted a dome from modelling clay. It turned out pretty well.
